The hold fast tattoo for a salior was used to be a good luck symbol and to make sure they had a good grip. In addition to being a general good luck charm for a salior, it also means to “hold on” in Danish. It is said to help you to not drop the line or to fall overboard.

The hold fast tattoo is one of the older sailor tattoos. These old school sailor tattoos are a way to keep sailor superstitions and sailor culture alive.

Sailors were a superstitious group and believed that specific symbols helped protect from certain unfriendly situations at sea. Like the pig and hen on my feet, they where to help keep a sailor from drowning. As a surfer I was drawn to those. These symbols could attract good or bad luck depending on what it is.
Back in the day anything that could help bring some good luck to a sailor’s voyage was used in any way possible. Tattooing was one way you would keep that luck for your whole life.

We all need that reminder to “Hold Fast”

The front of the shirt has a Faith, Hope, and charity design on it.

The FHC design is the second tattoo I ever tattooed (on my left leg) and I’ve also been wearing a small FHC gold piece around my neck which was a gift from a friend the first time I visited Australia almost a decade ago.
